Rothenburg obde Tauber– fantastic medieval town

First posting for a new blog on 2012 trip to Italy.   Mainly for our benefit as it always makes a good record of our trips – but had a couple of requests from past readers, so open to the interested.  Enjoy - or not.

Stopped half way across Germany down a zillion miles of autobahns, via hour and a half hold up for really horrible accident, at a place that looked a nice place to stay a night and recommended in Rough Guide.  Only to find it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Germany and full of Japanese tourist groups.  But can see why, as it is just amazingly attractive town.   Lovely old streets and whole town surrounded by walk around old walls and cobbled streets.  Had chosen a great B&B, Pension Elke, beautifully renovated old house above a shop in the main street – see below right.  Shops full of upmarket “stuff” including huge Christmas shop and plenty of teddy bear shops.

Went on a brilliant evening walking and information tour with a great guide “the Night Watchman” and decided we needed more that an hour today and a couple on the way back at the end of the holiday.  So booked in for 2 nights in October so that we can have a day wandering the streets and river.  Highly recommended town to visit.

Onwards to Italy via Austria - more motorways and roadworks.
